The Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies

The Leon Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies (RIMS) was established in 1975 to provide the logistical support required for maritime research. The Institute is located in the Research Authority of the University of Haifa. The Institute supports terrestrial, coastal and underwater research projects conducted by the senior researchers of the Department of Maritime Civilizations, by the Department’s research students and by a large number of associate researchers directly affiliated with it. The Institute is unique in Israel and among the world’s leaders in underwater archaeology. Since its establishment, it has pioneered leading research and established a universal reputation for the quality and innovation of its research.

The Zinman Institute of Archaeology

The Zinman Institute of Archaeology was established in 1988 through the generosity of Betty Zinman and her late husband, Philip Zinman of Florida, loyal friends of the University of Haifa. Because of the Institute’s location at the university on the summit of Mount Carmel, adjacent to the northern coastal plain, valleys, and near the Galilee and Golan Heights, it was only natural that its primary goal would be the investigation of all the various periods of antiquity in northern Israel.

The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History

The Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) promotes the University of Haifa as a leading international center of activity in pre-modern Mediterranean studies. The Center works to strengthen and focus research at the University of Haifa, in order to place its researchers in active research networks in Israel and abroad that are concerned with the history of the Mediterranean. It recruits outstanding and prominent researchers, thereby strengthening the field of Mediterranean studies in Haifa, as well as the field of historical studies itself. Among other things, the Center emphasizes the study of the eastern Mediterranean basin, and encourages interdisciplinary collaborations on broader Mediterranean topics, such as marine sciences and ecology, in which the University has already positioned itself at the forefront of research.
