🛶 This is how they sailed 8,000 years ago: A prehistoric reed boat sets sail on the Carmel Coast!
Submerged deep off the Carmel coast lie dozens of Neolithic settlements (7,000-10,000 years ago), researched by Prof. Ehud Galili. Although fishing hooks found there prove the inhabitants sailed in deep waters and even reached Cyprus, no remains of actual vessels were ever found.
To understand how our ancestors navigated the seas, University of Haifa researchers conducted an experimental study. Prof. David Friesem, MA student Shay Niv, and Prof.

Deborah Cvikel reconstructed a boat from scratch, using only materials and technologies available to Neolithic humans:
• 🌊 Starting Small: Due to uncertainty regarding the use of sails in this era, a scale model was built first to test buoyancy and sailing capability.
• 🌾 The Real Deal: After the model proved successful, a 4-meter-long reed boat was built and successfully sailed!

💬 "The research adds a new layer to our understanding of how Carmel coast inhabitants adapted to the coastal environment thousands of years ago," concludes Prof. Friesem.
